Welcome Address by Senator Dr. Khalid Ranjha (Rector, IMS)

Honourable Lt. General Khalid Maqbool
Governor of the Punjab
Members Board of Governors, IMS
Guests
Graduate Students
Ladies and Gentlemen

Asslam-o-Alekum.

This is indeed a proud privilege to welcome Governor of the Punjab, Lt. General Khalid Maqbool as our Chief Guest both on my behalf and that of the worthy Board Members, as well as on behalf of the faculty and the students of the Institute of Management Sciences. I assure you sir, your presence among us on this auspicious occasion as the Patron of the institute is a great source of encouragement for the IMS. Our faculty and students join me whole heartedly in welcoming you.

The untiring effort of the faculty and the keen interest shown by the management in translating the vision of the Board has won the IMS the place it deserves in the eyes of all interested in quality education in Pakistan.

I must extend my heartiest congratulations to all those who have worked diligently and remained committed to the development of this institution. But for their efforts this institute could not have achieved its present position and rating.

The institute, since its establishment in 1986, has made a name for itself within and outside the country. We feel motivated when we receive employers showing preference to hire our graduates. Our graduates in Business, Management and Computer Sciences have established their mark in the Private Sector for the quality of their professional training. Now it is truly one of the leading chartered institutions in the country.

We have been successful in the immediate objective of maintaining a high standard and have risen to the forefront of Computer Sciences, Business and Management Education in the private sector. The institution has been adequately responding to the growing importance of information technology and as a consequence the focus of this institution in all programs of its education is mainly in these areas.

I will leave it to the Dean to throw more light on the Institution's achievements and progress when presenting his report.

There are numerous examples of the contribution of the private sector in establishing centers of excellence and learning in the advanced countries. Their efforts are visible in the quality of their human resource and success in every field of life - medicine, science and technology, liberal arts and humanities.

No country, no matter how rich, can meet its social obligation in the field of education and health through its own public resources. In view of this fact, a majority of the leading colleges and universities in the West are privately run institutions.

I hope that further efforts by the private sector will not only improve the quality of undergraduate and graduate degree programs but special efforts will be directed towards introducing research areas, which may boost the economy of the country.

Our task in the private sector is to expand competent and qualified human resource of the nation hand in hand with the efforts of the government.

Our major aim should be to increase opportunities through development of our youth and consequently for improvement of the standards of living in the country. This can be achieved only through good education.

In addition to teaching, the Institute of Management Sciences has also been taking a profound interest in research activities. Its faculty members are involved in different research projects. The advance courses offered to students aim at encouraging in them a desire for investigation. We would be very happy to collaborate with the government in this regard and provide necessary expertise as and when desired.

In the end I would like to congratulate the graduating students and wish them success in their careers. I would also like to remind you of the great responsibilities that you bear to your Alma Mater as the torch bearers of the IMS, whose reputation you must safeguard by working with dedication and devotion and to the best of the ability for the organization or the institution with which you may be working at any given time.

You should also continue your association with your Alma Mater so that your teachers and staff of IMS could know where you are, how you are progressing in your career.

Finally I would like to thank Lt. General Khaild Maqbool, Governor of the Punjab for honoring the Institute of Management Sciences by presiding over its Convocation 2006 distributing prizes and degrees to its graduating students. I would also like to thank our honored guests for gracing this most auspicious occasion.

Thank you.
